The Best Christmas Destinations in the World 2026

Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, a natural long weekend and a perfect launch point for a full festive week away. From the only place on earth where Christmas is a permanent condition (Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland) to Europe’s oldest market in Strasbourg, Vienna’s twenty Christmas markets, and Craiova, the Romanian city that just broke every Christmas market voting record in history, these are the eight destinations doing Christmas properly in 2026.

Christmas is the most travelled holiday on earth. More flights, more hotels, more advance planning, and more money spent in the weeks surrounding December 25 than at any other point in the calendar. The destinations that do it best, the cities where the market stalls extend across entire medieval squares, where the mulled wine is made from a recipe that predates the printing press, where Santa Claus operates out of a village on the Arctic Circle, fill up months in advance every year.

2026 is a particularly strong Christmas travel year. Christmas Day falls on a Friday, creating a natural long weekend for those who want to return home quickly, or a natural launch point for a full week away. The Christmas markets open in most destinations from late November through December 23, earlier in some places, giving a six-week window that is one of the longest in recent years.

This is the list of where to go. Eight destinations, every type of Christmas traveller, and where to stay in each one.

Santa Claus Village and Lapland Christmas Season

1. Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland

Festival: Santa Claus Village and Lapland Christmas Season
When: Late November through early January
Why go: The only place on earth where Christmas is a permanent condition

Rovaniemi is the official hometown of Santa Claus. This is not a marketing claim, the Finnish government, in a characteristically Nordic act of institutional commitment to the idea, has officially designated Rovaniemi as Santa’s residence, and the Arctic Circle passes through the Santa Claus Village on the city’s outskirts, meaning you can cross the literal line that separates the temperate world from the Arctic while shaking Santa’s hand.

The Santa Claus Village is the centrepiece but not the whole story. Rovaniemi sits in Finnish Lapland at 66 degrees north, where December brings near-total darkness, the sun barely crests the horizon for a few hours each day, that should feel oppressive but instead produces an atmosphere of extraordinary intimacy. The snow is real, deep, and present from October through April. The reindeer that pull sleds through the forest are not props. The huskies that power the dog-sledding excursions are working animals who have been doing this longer than the tourists have been photographing them. The Northern Lights appear above the trees on clear nights and are visible from approximately 30 nights of the Lapland December.

The Christmas House at the Santa Claus Village runs through December 23, 2026, with daily activities for families including elf workshops, reindeer farm visits, snowmobile safaris, and the various formats of aurora hunting that the local operators have refined over decades of watching the sky.

For adults travelling without children, Rovaniemi offers a different version of the same landscape: cross-country skiing through the silent forest at dusk, ice fishing on the frozen river, a night in a glass-roofed Aurora Cabin with the Northern Lights visible overhead, and the Finnish sauna tradition, heating to extreme temperatures, rolling in the snow, repeating, that restores something most city-dwellers have forgotten they were missing.

Where to stay

  • The Santa Claus Holiday Village at the Arctic Circle has multiple accommodation types ranging from standard hotel rooms to the glass-roofed Aurora Cabins that provide direct Northern Lights viewing from the bed.
  • The Arctic Treehouse Hotel, individual wooden treehouses on elevated platforms with panoramic forest views and glass-fronted sleeping areas, is the most photographed accommodation in Lapland and requires booking six to nine months ahead for December dates.
  • The Arctic Light Hotel in Rovaniemi city centre is the finest conventional hotel option, with a strong spa facility. All Aurora Cabin options throughout Lapland book out for December well in advance, book immediately.
Christkindelsmärik, Strasbourg, France

2. Strasbourg, France

Festival: Christkindelsmärik
When: 28 November to 24 December 2026
Why go: Europe’s oldest Christmas market, in the Capital of Christmas

Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik is widely celebrated as one of Europe’s most historic and atmospheric Christmas markets, dating back to 1570. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Gothic Strasbourg Cathedral and spread across several squares including Place Kléber and Place Broglie, this market feels like stepping into a storybook. Tens of thousands of fairy lights illuminate over 300 charming stalls selling hand-crafted ornaments, regional Alsatian delicacies such as bredele cookies and tarte flambée, and steaming mugs of mulled wine.

The bredele, small spiced butter cookies baked in the Alsatian tradition and sold from every stall in dozens of shapes and flavours, are the correct edible souvenir and the one most worth eating on the spot while they are still warm. The tarte flambée (a thin-crust Alsatian pizza of crème fraiche, onions, and lardons) from the market stalls is the correct meal between markets. The Alsatian mulled wine (Glühwein) is the drink.

The cathedral dominates the main square in a way that no photograph fully conveys, the pink Vosges sandstone, the rose window, the single tower that was the tallest building in the world for over two centuries, and in December, lit by the market lights below and surrounded by the smell of mulled wine and roasting chestnuts, it is one of the finest Christmas settings in Europe.

The centrepiece is a towering Christmas tree on Place Kléber that often reaches over 30 metres in height, creating a breathtaking focal point for photos and memories. More than 2 million visitors come each year.

Where to stay

  • The Hotel Regent Petite France on the canal in the Petite France district is the finest property in the city, in December the canal-side timbered houses of the district are lit by Christmas lights and the view from the hotel rooms is extraordinary.
  • The Sofitel Strasbourg Grande Ile provides the most convenient market access from a luxury base. Mid-range options on or around the Grande Ile (the UNESCO-listed island at the city centre) provide walking distance access to all market squares.

Book at least three months ahead for December weekends.

Wiener Christkindlmarkt, Vienna, Austria

3. Vienna, Austria

Festival: Wiener Christkindlmarkt
When: Mid-November to 26 December 2026
Why go: The most complete Christmas city in Europe, markets, concerts, and New Year’s Eve

Vienna does not have a Christmas market. It has approximately twenty, spread across the city’s imperial squares and palace courtyards, each with its own character and its own reason to visit. The market in front of the Rathaus (City Hall) is the largest and most famous, the market feels less like a commercial event and more like a grand celebration of Austrian culture, complete with live brass bands and international choirs. Whether you are strolling through the light-filled avenues with a warm mug of Glühwein or watching skaters glide through the trees, Vienna perfectly captures the nostalgic, magical essence of Christmas.

The Schönbrunn Palace market, in the courtyard of the Habsburg summer palace, is the most atmospheric, the baroque yellow facade of the palace as a backdrop, the music of the court orchestras in the surrounding rooms audible from the market, and a curated selection of high-quality Austrian craft stalls rather than the generic market products that fill the larger venues. The Belvedere Palace market and the Am Hof market in the old city centre are equally worth an afternoon.

Beyond the markets, Vienna in December is a city performing at its peak. The Wiener Philharmoniker’s New Year’s Concert (broadcast to 90 countries, tickets balloted rather than sold) represents the cultural highlight of the European Christmas calendar. The Silvesterpfad, Vienna’s New Year’s Eve street celebration, turns the inner city into a free outdoor concert venue with multiple stages from the afternoon through midnight.

Where to stay

  • The Hotel Sacher Vienna, beside the State Opera House, is Vienna’s most celebrated hotel and the home of the original Sachertorte.
  • The Palais Hansen Kempinski on the Ringstrasse provides palace-scale grandeur at an equivalent price.

For mid-range options with excellent market access, hotels on or within walking distance of the Ringstrasse cover all the main market locations. Vienna accommodation books out for the New Year’s Eve period as early as January, book immediately for December 31 dates.

Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt

4. Nuremberg, Germany

Festival: Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt
When: 28 November to 24 December 2026
Why go: The world’s most famous Christmas market, dating to 1628, in a perfectly preserved medieval city

The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is one of the world’s oldest and most famous Christmas markets, dating back to 1628. It takes over the Hauptmarkt (main square) in the heart of the Old Town, overlooked by the Gothic Church of Our Lady. Rows of red-and-white striped stalls sell handmade ornaments, carved toys, and the city’s iconic Nürnberger Rostbratwurst and gingerbread. The market opens with the famous Christkind, a golden-haired Christmas angel who gives a traditional prologue from the church balcony.

The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is not the largest Christmas market in Germany and it is not the most spectacular visually. It is the one with the greatest historical depth and the most consistent quality. The handmade ornaments, particularly the Rauschgoldengel (gilded angel decorations) and the Zwetschgenmänn (prune men, small figures made from dried prunes and wire that have been a Nuremberg Christmas tradition since the 17th century), are the authentic craft products that the market’s reputation was built on. The gingerbread (Lebkuchen) from the Nuremberg bakers is the finest in Germany and arrives in tins that survive the journey home.

The medieval old city surrounding the market, largely rebuilt after wartime destruction but rebuilt accurately, provides a setting for the stalls that most Christmas markets can only gesture toward. The castle above the city, the churches, the fountains, the cobblestoned streets descending from the Hauptmarkt in every direction, Nuremberg in December is the visual embodiment of the German Christmas market tradition.

Where to stay

  • The Marriott Nuremberg and the Le Méridien Grand Hotel Nuremberg are the two flagship luxury properties, both near the main station with easy walking distance to the Hauptmarkt.
  • The Hotel Victoria Nuremberg on Königstrasse is the most conveniently placed mid-range option directly on the main shopping street leading to the market.

Book two to three months ahead for peak December weekends.

Craiova Christmas Market

5. Craiova, Romania

Festival: Craiova Christmas Market
When: Late November to January 2026/2027
Why go: Europe’s largest Christmas market by area, 280,000 square metres, voted the best in Europe in 2026

Craiova hosts Europe’s largest holiday market footprint, spreading out over a staggering 280,000 square meters. Rather than keeping the festivities confined to one square, the entire city center becomes a fairytale world. This year, the city brings The Nutcracker to life with giant ornaments, oversized sweets, toy sculptures and millions of sparkling lights that turn the centre into a dazzling open-air stage. The atmosphere feels both grand and warm, crafted with a level of detail that surprises even seasoned Christmas-market travellers. Craiova’s attractions add to the magic: Eastern Europe’s highest-flying Santa sleigh, a glittering ice rink, a panoramic Ferris wheel, and charming hand-painted chalets.

Food is another highlight. The market celebrates the flavours of Eastern Europe, Armenian, Georgian, Greek, Turkish, Moldovan, Bulgarian, Serbian and more, creating one of the region’s most generous culinary journeys in winter.

Craiova shattered all public voting records held by European Best Destinations in 2026 with over 142,000 votes from travellers worldwide, more than any Christmas market in history. For travellers who want to experience Europe’s most talked-about emerging Christmas destination at a fraction of the cost of Vienna, Nuremberg, or Strasbourg, Craiova is the standout destination of the 2026 Christmas season.

Where to stay

  • The Hotel Ramada by Wyndham Craiova and the Hotel Parc on Alexandru Ioan Cuza Boulevard are the two strongest options currently available, both within easy reach of the market area. Prices are significantly lower than equivalent Western European Christmas market destinations, good accommodation in Craiova costs a fraction of Vienna or Strasbourg equivalents.
Edinburgh's Christmas Markets

6. Edinburgh, Scotland

Festival: Edinburgh’s Christmas Markets
When: 22 November 2026 to 4 January 2027
Why go: The most atmospheric Christmas festival in the United Kingdom, markets, ice rinks, and a city built for winter celebration

Edinburgh’s Christmas festival transforms the city’s most dramatic public spaces, East Princes Street Gardens, St Andrew Square, George Street, into a connected series of markets, funfair rides, ice rinks, and performance venues that collectively constitute the finest Christmas festival in the British Isles. The backdrop is the reason: Edinburgh Castle on its volcanic rock above the gardens, the Georgian New Town to the north, the medieval Old Town rising to the south, a city designed by geography and architecture to be extraordinary in every season, and particularly extraordinary in winter darkness with the festival lights below it.

The event is more than just a market, it’s a celebration of Scottish warmth and tradition. From mulled Irn-Bru to shortbread and whisky, the specifically Scottish food and drink of the season makes Edinburgh’s market a genuinely different experience from the Glühwein-and-Lebkuchen circuit of the continental European markets.

The Scott Monument ice rink in East Princes Street Gardens, skating below the Victorian Gothic spire with the castle visible above, is the most photogenic ice rink in Europe and one of the most enjoyable Christmas experiences available in Britain. The Hogmanay celebrations on December 31 and January 1, for which Edinburgh is equally famous, extend the Christmas travel window into the new year.

Where to stay

  • The Balmoral Hotel at the east end of Princes Street is Edinburgh’s grandest and most centrally positioned Christmas property, the clock above the entrance is set three minutes fast to ensure travellers make their trains from Waverley Station below.
  • The InterContinental Edinburgh The George on George Street provides the best access to the George Street market.
  • The Virgin Hotel Edinburgh and the Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel are excellent boutique alternatives.

Book well ahead for the Hogmanay period

The Rockefeller Center tree

7. New York City, USA

Festival: Winter Village at Bryant Park, the Rockefeller Center tree, and the NYC Christmas season
When: November through January
Why go: The most cinematic Christmas in the world, the Rockefeller tree, the skating rink, the department store windows

New York in December is a city performing a version of Christmas that the rest of the world has been borrowing from for seventy years. The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, typically 70 to 100 feet tall, covered in approximately 50,000 LED lights, topped by a Swarovski crystal star that weighs approximately 900 pounds, is the image that defines American Christmas globally and lands differently in person than any photograph prepares you for.

The Winter Village at Bryant Park, a free-admission market of over 170 shops and two ice skating rinks in the heart of Midtown, is the city’s finest Christmas market and one of the best in the United States. The department store windows along Fifth Avenue (Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany) are elaborate animated displays that constitute their own form of public art during the Christmas season. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Great Hall decorated for Christmas, the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show in the Bronx, and the performances at Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera complete a Christmas cultural programme that no other city matches in volume or quality.

Where to stay

  • Midtown hotels provide the best access to the Rockefeller tree, Bryant Park, and the Fifth Avenue windows.
  • The Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue is the most famous and most Christmassy of the options.
  • The Lotte New York Palace on Madison Avenue, the Baccarat Hotel on West 53rd Street, and the Aman New York on Fifth Avenue are the finest luxury alternatives.
  • For value, hotels in Midtown South or the Upper West Side provide proximity without the full Midtown premium.

Book immediately for Christmas week, New York hotels in the final week of December are among the most demand-pressured in the world.

Prague Christmas Markets

8. Prague, Czech Republic

Festival: Prague Christmas Markets
When: 30 November to 6 January 2026/2027
Why go: Europe’s most beautiful Christmas market city, with medieval architecture and lower prices than Western Europe

Prague pairs Old Town Square markets with fairy-tale architecture and lower prices than Western Europe, and it often gets a dusting of snow. The Old Town Square market, with the Gothic Tyn Church behind it, the Astronomical Clock on the hour, and the Czech baroque buildings surrounding the square, is the most photographed Christmas market setting in Central Europe. The Lesser Town Square across the Charles Bridge provides a second market that is typically quieter and more locally oriented than the tourist-facing Old Town venues.

The Czech Christmas food is the specific reason to eat at the market stalls rather than the surrounding restaurants: trdelník (a chimney cake of rolled dough wrapped around a spit, roasted over coals, and coated in sugar and cinnamon), svařák (Czech mulled wine, slightly different in spicing from the German Glühwein), and the roasted pork and sausage stands that operate from the market’s food section. The Czech Christmas carp tradition, carp sold alive from street tanks throughout December, bought by Czech families and often kept alive in the bathtub until Christmas Eve dinner, is the most specifically Czech of the season’s details and worth observing if not participating in.

Prague is the strongest value proposition of any European Christmas market destination, accommodation, food, and drink costs are significantly lower than Vienna, Strasbourg, or Nuremberg while the architectural quality of the setting matches any of them.

Where to stay:

  • The Four Seasons Hotel Prague on the Vltava riverfront is the finest property in the city, with the castle visible from the upper-floor rooms.
  • The Augustine Hotel in the Mala Strana (Lesser Town) district, a converted 13th-century Augustinian monastery, is the most atmospheric option.
  • The Grand Hotel Bohemia on Králodvorská Street is the best positioned mid-range option within walking distance of the Old Town Square market.

Prague remains excellent value relative to Western Europe, book two to three months ahead for December peak dates.

A note on timing

Most European Christmas markets open in late November and close on or before December 24. The peak weekend dates, the first two weekends of December, and December 20 to 23, are the busiest and most expensive. For the best balance of atmosphere and manageability, the third week of November (if markets have opened) or the second week of December are the sweet spots. Arriving mid-week rather than on Friday avoids the weekend crowd surges at all locations.

For Rovaniemi and the Lapland destinations, December 1 to 23 is the Christmas season proper, the activities, the Santa Village, and the maximum Northern Lights probability align in this window. Christmas week itself in Lapland is the most expensive and most crowded period.

For New York, the tree lighting at Rockefeller Center (typically the first Wednesday of December) is the event that draws the largest single crowd. The week before Christmas is the most atmospheric for the department store windows and the overall city atmosphere.
